Service Description

Step by step: how the attic floor is insulated?

If you want to turn a loft into an attic, the thermal insulation is one of the most important operations in view of the vulnerability of such a space to the outside temperature.

It should be noted that the attic insulation is not confined to the interior roof slopes isolation, but requires also the insulation of the floor. This must be done as thoroughly as the first, because it has a very important role in the thermal comfort of that space.

Depending on the materials from which is made the floor and the technical building, it will be decided how it will be isolated.

In the following, we will present two different techniques used for the same attics. The two techniques were necessary because a third part of the floor was made of reinforced concrete and the other two thirds were built on wooden structure. In both cases the main insulating material was the glass mineral wool.

Steps:

  1. On the reinforced concrete floor was built a wooden structure. There were fixed props of 12cm height, from meter to meter, in rows situated at 50 cm one from another, on which were fixed wooden beams of 8×8 cm.
  2. There were drawn the installations, after which, on the floor of concrete were carried rolls of glass mineral wool. Due to the large space between the floor and the top of the wooden structure, they were able to apply two layers of mineral wool.
  3. After the insulation layer has been completed, on the structure of wood, boards of 5 cm thick were fixed. After their perfect flatness was ensured, over them were fixed OSB plates, on which was installed the laminate flooring.
  4. The flooring on the wooden structure was built with the basic 10×20 cm beams. On top of them OSB boards were installed. On the lower level was built a structure of metal profiles.
  5. At this stage of the works were done electrical installation cables. These were introduced into the rigid plastic tube, after which they were fixed on the wooden beams.
  6. The space inside the metal structure was filled with glass mineral wool, after which it was sealed with drywall boards. Finally, they went through classic finishing works.

The glass mineral wool

The insulating properties of the glass mineral wool derive from its own manufacturing technology: the mat is made from continuous material fibres with embedding of a large volume of air between them, air which is prevented from moving freely.

This ensemble of fibre-air has good insulating properties. The melt of material (65% glass wastes and the rest of the limestone, quartz, feldspar, dolomite) is spinning into fibres with small thickness, being agglomerated with a binder. Finally, a material with a great elasticity is obtained.

Characteristics:

  • Insulates thermal and it does not hold water. Due to the dense mineral fibre and high permeability, the water stream can pass through the insulating material, cooling without precipitating. Even if the condense produces in the insulating mass, the amount of water evaporates rapidly in the free spaces of the air flow, to the outside.
  • It does not burn, it does not sustain the combustion – combustibility class C1 – and it does not favour the growth of microorganisms.
  • It has a relatively low density.
  • It requires a barrier against steam.
  • It is easy to install.
