Find how to choose the ideal bathroom floor and wall tiles
When we arrange, decorate or renovate a bathroom, there are questions like: What colour of floor tiles and wall tiles to choose? What size should have the chosen tiles? How to place them on the wall, vertically or horizontally? Should I tackle all the walls or just the exposed areas? We will answer at all these questions, in turn, in the today’s article.
The first step – choosing the floor tiles and the wall tiles tiles
The multitude of designs and colours of floor tiles, wall tiles and mosaic for finishing the bathrooms on the profile market make it difficult for us choosing the right finish. Here are a few little secrets that will help you not to lose too much time for choosing the ideal model, perfectly adapted to the dimensions of the space that it is going to finish:
– The size of the tiles must be chosen depending on the area that follows to be plated. Measure the width / height of the wall and choose tiles that can be full fitted from one end to another. Inserting a row of tiles cut in a corner or on an end of wall spoil the final look of the decor.
So, if you have a large bathroom, you can switch to a type of wall tiles with large size tiles, while for finishing a small bathroom would be better suited the small models, if the big ones can not be inserted whole, without cut / severed.
– When measuring the number of tiles with which you will finish a wall, you could take into account the possibility of inserting a decorative belt or some other colour tiles, coming from another collection. Interleaving of the main model, especially for wrapping the large surfaces with a different pattern is indicated to avoid trimming the tiles. For example, if you want and especially if the surface requires this thing, you can insert a row of central mosaic between 6 tiles of wall tiles with size of 30 × 20 cm each, arranged horizontally.
– Calculate exactly the material requirement and buy it or order it all at once. Otherwise, you risk not to find the chosen model or to get with two shades of the same model, knowing that the shade of products from different batches can vary.
The colour, texture and appearance of the floor tiles and of the wall tiles for a perfect bathroom
As I say every time when somebody asks me for an opinion, choosing a shade for finishing a bathroom must be made primarily based on the personal preferences, but also on the room surface. You can choose to cover all the walls in one colour, just as you can choose to use more colours that will create a great decor.
If you want to combine several shades and colours of wall tiles, look for buying them all from the same manufacturer, possibly from the same collection. In this way you can choose easier models that go perfectly together, to form a harmonious decor. If you decide to go on the chromatic combinations variant you should have in mind that the decorative elements (belts) will significantly increase the final price of the purchased materials, which are sold per piece and not per square meter as wall tiles, mosaic or other finishes like this.
The floor tiles, wall tiles, mosaic and other finishes from the same category are ideal for finishing the bathroom that keeps its shape, appearance and texture despite being exposed to a humid environment. And because we have reached this point, it should be reminded that a wet shiny floor tiles is very slippery, which urges me to recommend you to avoid the shiny models (especially if you have small children or elderly family) of floor tiles in for those with matte surface, eventually with texture slightly embossed, models that have an increased adherence.
Visual delimitation of the interest areas of the bathroom using the decorative finishes
I know people who have seen in stores or in magazines of interior designs, various bathrooms with walls plated in bold colours combinations, they loved it, but when it came the time to choose the colours for finishing and decorating the home bathroom, they did not have the courage to use more than one colour. If you want to get a fancy bathroom, do not be afraid to introduce into the decor more colours or shades of the same colour with which will not only help you embellish this room, but also you will delimitate the visual areas of interest thereof: the tub or the cabin shower, sink, toilet and the bidet site if it exists.
You can interpolate not only different colours, but also different types and sizes of finishes: the wall tiles, glass mosaic, ceramic or stone, natural stone, etc. In most cases we use a main colour in the form of wall tiles tiles applied on the large areas and the other colours (the same material or different materials) being placed in smaller portions, just enough to highlight different areas of the bathroom. You can see more examples of combining of colours in the photo gallery below, and in the articles: Combinations of wall tiles for the bathroom – Images and Unusual combinations of wall tiles in the modern bathroom decor.
Variants of place and arrangement of wall tiles tiles on the wall
Another question that may arise during the process of installing and decorating the bathroom is bound by the way in which the wall tiles tiles should be placed on the wall. And here this decision must be made according to personal preference. But to make a decision, you should know what options you have:
– The classic installation is that one in which the wall tiles tiles are placed one above the other to form parallel rows. This type of installation is the easiest and most economical, the material wastage is minimized.
– Diagonal installation is considered to be the most difficult type of installation. Besides the particular aspect that can be obtained using the tiles mounted in diagonally way, some voices argue that this type of installation is recommended to be used in plating the surfaces with small bumps, because it has the power to mask their imperfections. Unfortunately, for obtaining such a decoryou will have to buy a larger quantity of finishes and to be prepared to have at the end a lot of debris.
– Chessboard installation in which interleaves two different colours of the same model of floor tiles/wall tiles is especially suited in retro style designed bathroom, although it can be used also in the decor of modern bathrooms.
– Interlace installation is easy to realize and it is recommended to be used especially in the case of imperfect tiles, because this type of place mask the small defects of wall tiles. Interleaving is recommended for using of narrow tiles, with retro aspect, known in the West as “subway tiles “.
With or without joining point?
Until a few years ago we could not imagine that the floor tiles and the wall tiles can be mounted differently than with the point of combination between tiles. But in recent years the fashion of surfaces seamlessly joining reached to us, and also with it the dilemma: how is better?
If you want to get a uniform look of the bathroom floor or wall choose the installing without joining points. Please note that not any floor tiles and wall tiles lends itself to this type of installation, only the rectified models, namely the ones with identical perfectly sizes. Those that are not rectified will not allow you to get a perfect finish, the small deviations become highly visible at the end of installation. In a short story, the uncorrected models must be installed with joining points. So, as you see, and joints have their role.
