The staircase and railing

Climb your house on the social scale

He built a two-storied house … they will say with a touch of envy in the voice all those who will pass by your newly built house or to which you just was built another floor after another refurbishment. The floors (the more they are, the more well it is for the perspective of climbing on the social scale of the owner) offers extra space but brings with them a small dilemma … The access mode. The vertical equivalent of any known way of access by humans was from the beginning, and it left (in most cases) the staircase. To make it clear that we are dealing with an essential element for any building that rises beyond one floor, we will only say that without the staircase, the floors would be a waste of space and material.

Staircase with personality

It is natural to treat the staircase as a separate architectural element, with its distinct personality, so that the whole building benefits from the point of view of stability and of the aesthetic. The stair personality gives value to the space that hosts it, ennobles it, supports its harmony. What does imprint personality to the stairs? The materials chosen for its construction and finishing (the structure – metallic, reinforced or wooden concrete, finishes – wood, natural stone, sandstone, glass) and, perhaps first of all, the railing that “guards” it and makes it “accessible” for who uses it.

The safety, first of all

Even if the balustrade is frequently aesthetically appreciated, we must not forget that its role is primarily to protect, to ensure the vertical access in any construction, especially in public spaces where the staircase and the railing must comply with rigorous rules, without which the building does not receive the building permit (in the case of a new building) or the operating permit.

“The Artistic Impression”

After the stair strength has been verified by the builders, you will find yourself in a much more enjoyable but no less difficult task: choosing from the multitude of newer materials on the construction and interior design market. As it is logical, the style in which the house was built – inside and outside – will imprint the style of the staircase and the railing. And when it comes to style, the illumination (artificial and natural), the colors in which the walls, the furniture, the floor, etc. are to be taken into account.

A simple-shape railing can easily be integrated with any architectural and interior design. But the formal simplicity must never be associated, understood as the “poverty” of shapes. The simplicity, in fact, involves the ingenuity of the creator, the technique and the complexity of the details of the joints of all the building elements that make up the railing assembly, the materials used and the sophisticated technologies of their processing. Said, as the American would say, “less is more”. And, more than ever, it means more elegant.

As for a possible beauty contest between stairs or railings, no mention of such a thing. We can never say that a wrought iron railing would be “more beautiful” than a matte or stainless steel glass one. But we also can judge if a certain type of balustrade fits or does not fit in a particular building. It is certain that a balustrade is the more “successful” as it is projected alongside the staircase of the house, because the architect who planned, restored or designed the house can be able to capture the atmosphere, the spirit of that house and give it all the details.

And, as we do not want to drown ourselves, we pay close attention to all the details. So we will choose either an opaque or a transparent railing, a masonry, wood, stainless steel or glass railing – depending on taste, utility or “artistic” impression, or depending on the mood of the day the choosing is made. As most of the choices are made, this is not recommended, but sometimes it gives results, sometimes regrets.

What wood do you use to create an interior staircase?

In the case of the two or more levels houses, it is best to make the staircase of concrete to have a higher resistance. However, if you want to have a rustic house or to build a cottage, the staircase can be made of wood. The wood is easy to process and can be painted and varnished for good resistance over time. Also, the linkages and joints are much easier to achieve. Here are the types of wood you can use for such a construction.

The oak wood is of superior quality. It is a precious wood, hard and durable, and its price is higher as, the older it is and the properly dried. The old and dry natural oak wood is also used to make luxury furniture and yachts.

The beech wood is tough, very resistant to shocks, and the paint adheres well on its surface. The texture of the beech wood is fine and resembling the texture of maple or birch wood. It is perhaps the most used wood in the production of interior stairs, and the quality-price ratio is very good. Considering that it has a pale color, the beech wood is the best option when it comes to dark coloring.

The maple wood is a shock-resistant wood, very resistant to weather and supports any kind of painting. It has medium hardness, fine texture and light to white color.

The pine wood is a soft wood, appreciated especially for its rustic appearance to the interiors. Its color is light. Due to the fact that it is not a hard wood, the pine is not very used in the construction of the stairs.

For the wooden stairs producing, we think the most suitable wood is the hard one, hardwood essence. That is why we consider the oak and beech wood to be very good choices, the maple wood is a good choice, while the pine wood is an acceptable choice.
