A suitable staircase for an interior with style

Designing an interior staircase requires mandatory the consultation of a specialist who can offer the most appropriate solutions depending on the available space, the stair shape and the materials used in the final design. Firstly, a staircase must provide the sense of security for the one who steps on it.

It is important that it is not too long, but not too high, not to create the feeling that it is too tedious to go up. In the case of a classic project, the diagonal of a rectangle will give the virtual inclined plan that will “support” the stair, but if we are talking about a narrow space, the specialists’ recommendation is for a spiral staircase.

Starting from the total length division, at the recommended 40-50 cm length, we can calculate the number of steps required. However, the values obtained must be analysed both from the point of view of the advantages and disadvantages, either we choose several stair steps but with a small height or the variant with fewer steps but with a greater distance between them.

After setting all the technical details, another important step is choosing the finishes. A classic staircase is made of solid wood planks, specifically for mountain chalets, but modern variants have brought attention to iron-concrete stairs covered with wood, marble or anti-slip sandstone. If we go to the luxury category, we are already talking in increasing order about the stairs with stainless steel railings, wrought iron, crystal stairs and impressive sized security windows, instead of protective rails.

The interior designers recommend keeping a harmony between the interior staircase shade, furniture pieces and the floor of the house. Generally, in traditional, classic interiors go well with dark colours, and for modern, contemporary spaces, specialists recommend the light colours.

And in the light chapter the rule is respected, so that natural, light colours are used (white, natural beech, natural oak, cherry) and where the light bathes the interior through wide windows, dark colours and textures are preferred, such as walnut or mahogany.

In the case of stairs which have wood and metal composition, the interior designers recommend the use of contrasting colours, for example: black metal in combination with beech, white-transparent with cherry, grey metal in harmony with walnut or mahogany. Regardless of the chosen model, shape or finish, do not forget that the interior staircase can be the point of attraction of the house through design and colour, giving more personality and originality to the interior.

The staircase and railing

Increase your house on the social scale

He made his house with levels, they will say with a touch of envy in the voice all those who will pass by your newly built house or who just built another floor after renovation. The floors (the more they are, the more well for the perspective of increasing on the social scale of the owner) offers extra space but brings with them a little dilemma … the access mode.

The vertical equivalent of any known way of access by humans was from the beginning, and it is left (in most cases) the staircase. To make clear that we are dealing with an essential element for any building that rises beyond a level, we will only say that without the staircase, the floors would be a waste of space and material.

 Personality staircase

It is natural to treat the staircase as a separate architectural element, with its distinct personality, so that the whole building benefits from the point of view of stability and of the aesthetic … The stair personality gives value to the space that hosts it, ennobles it, supports its harmony. What gives personality to the stairs? The chosen materials for its construction and finishing (the metallic, reinforced concrete or wooden structure, finishes – wood, natural stone, sandstone, glass) and, perhaps first of all, the balustrade that “guards” it and makes it “accessible” for those who use it.

The safety first of all

Even if the balustrade is frequently aesthetically appreciated, we must not forget that its role is primarily to protect, to ensure the vertical access in any construction, especially in public spaces where the staircase and the balustrade must comply with rigorous rules, without which the building does not receive the building permit (in the case of a new building) or the operating permit.

The “Artistic Impression”

After the stair durability has been verified by the builders, to you, the owner will be gave to yourself a mission much more enjoyable but no less difficult: choosing from the multitude of newer materials on the construction and interior design market. As it is logical, the style in which the house was built – inside and outside – will give the style of the staircase and the balustrade. And when it comes to style, the illumination (artificial and natural), the colours in which the walls are painted, the furniture, the floor, etc. are to be taken into account.

An easy-shape railing can easily be integrated with any architectural and interior design. But the formal simplicity must never be associated, understood as the “poverty” of the forms. The simplicity, in fact, involves the ingenuity of the creator, the technique and the complexity of the details of the combination of all the building elements that make up the balustrade assembly, the used materials and the sophisticated technologies of their processing. In other way said, as the American would say, “less is more”. And, more than ever, it means more elegant.

As for a possible beauty contest between stairs or railings, no mention of such a thing. We can never say that a wrought iron railing would be “more beautiful” than a matte glass or stainless steel one. But we will judge that certain type of balustrade fits or does not fit in a particular building. It is certain that a balustrade is the more “successful” as it is projected with the staircase of the house, because the architect who designed, restored or arranged the house to be able to capture the atmosphere, the spirit of that house and give it all the details.

And, as we do not want to drown ourselves at the lakeside, we pay close attention to all the details. So we will choose either an opaque or a transparent railing, a masonry, wood, stainless steel or glass railing- depending on taste, utility or “artistic” impression. Or depending on the mood of the day when the choosing is made … As most of the choices are made. This last criterion is not recommended. But sometimes it gives results, sometimes regrets. Anyhow, it is your choosing!
