How to paint easily
Painting is one of the key points of a refurbishment. It is important not only to repair, but also to give a fresh look to the interior and exterior elements, first of all to the walls and the facade.
The colors of the walls and the way they blend into the whole house are the most important elements of the decor. Countless ideas can be used to decorate or redecorate your house to inspire it a look and to make the environment as pleasant as possible, whether you want to get warm and intimate, or you want to keep up with the fashion trends.
A solution for walls is their painting with decorative paint, preferably in bold colors such as pink, orange, green or turquoise. If you choose strong colors, then it is advisable to paint only one of the walls, the rest remaining white, in order not to create a tiring atmosphere. If you arrange your house in a rustic style, painting the walls in white may seem trivial, but it will be a great effect. The facade has always had both an aesthetic role, giving the house’s own personal touch, as well as a practical one, by protecting the house against the action of external agents and solar light, especially UV light. That is why it is important not only the color but also the quality of the paint used. Multiple types of paints can be used for facades.
The acrylics ones have the advantage of being diluted with water. This can also be done with solvents, but in this case the drying time becomes longer. The application is easy and the coverage capability is high, also having a fungicidal and against fungus appearance. In addition to protecting the masonry, it can also influence the thermal regime of the house. A white facade reflects the radiation altogether, while a green one absorbs the blue and red radiation, bringing a caloric intake. The colors also have an effect on insects: the flies avoid blue color, and mosquitoes are attracted to yellow-orange surfaces.
Paint the walls in seven steps
The appearance of new trends in interior design has made us, most of us, to abandon the old wall-finishing materials. The wallpaper or linen layer was replaced with the washable paint.
It provides a pleasant finish and it is a quick and relatively inexpensive way to change the look of the interiors. If you have some minimal knowledge, you can paint your apartment by yourself.
For this operation to be successful, it is necessary its plastering on the surface that need to be painted to be in a good condition, without mold or efflorescence and does not show any unevenness. It also has to be clean and dry, to have a uniform color and an absorption degree as low as possible. If the wall is wet, the causes will be treated, the safest solution being its isolation. In the presence of mold, the products against the mold or a solution composed of chlorine and water (25% chlorine) should be used.
If the wall is cracked, it is recommended that it be completely plastered or only the affected portions. The cracks must be cleaned and covered with plaster. In case of the deepest ones, a fiberglass reinforcement tape will be applied. After the plaster has dried, the repaired surface is sanded with abrasive paper.
Steps of work
- Sticking the protecting tape. If the ceiling and walls are painted in different colors, such as the one we are presenting here, the edge between the ceiling and the walls must be insulated with an adhesive tape to separate the two colors.
- The protection of the floor. The same type of tape was applied in the joint of the floor area and the floor wall. The laminate flooring was protected with sheets of paper. These were fixed to the edge of the plinth to avoid the movement during the painting.
- Preparation of the paint. The paint is prepared according to the instructions of the manufacturer. It is poured into a special vat which is provided with a grill to remove the surplus from the roller.
- The beginning of the operation. Top-down painting is recommended in successive squares with a 1-meter side, starting from a corner of the room, for example from right to left, if you are right-handed.
- Continue the operation. The operation is also repeated at the top of the wall. After applying the vertical strips, it returns to the same surface with horizontal movements. Finally, it is smoothed with vertical movements.
- Paint the corners. Painting the spaces where the large roller does not penetrate and the joints between the wall and the ceiling are made using a small roller or a medium brush.
- Applying the second layer. The second layer of paint is applied after drying the first, in perpendicular strips on the glass, in the direction of the light. Finally, it is smoothed in strips parallel to the window, without soaking the roller.
The end. Good to know!
Once you set up the area where you start painting the wall, do not interrupt the work halfway, but continue to the other corner without returning to the areas where the paint has already been applied. If on the narrow, brush-painted portions there are differences in the appearance against the background of the wall, it is advisable to return to the mini-roller painting without a single-end fitting that allows painting in the corners.
Choose well the paint for the facade
The exterior surfaces of the walls of our house deserve at least the same attention as the interior.
For their finishing, you have a wide range of products, from washable paints to decorative plasters. The surfaces must be prepared according to their structure. In most cases, they are either mineral plasters (in the case of thermally insulated walls) or expanded polystyrene.
If the surface is made of plaster, then it must be primed before finishing. The primer is applied only after the plaster has been let to dry for 28 days since it has been put into operation. It has the role of reinforcing the finishing support and of increasing the adhesion of the paint, while reducing the consumption of the finishing material. Also, the primer performs the salt barrier function. After the drying period indicated by the manufacturer, the finishing material can be applied. If you use washable paint, it can be easily applied with a textile roller. The surfaces must be clean and dust free.
They are painted from the bottom up without interruption to prevent splashes and the appearance of unsightly stripes. If you decide for decorative plaster, then you should call a specialist for commissioning. The product is conditioned at the ambient temperature with 24 hours before application. Prior to opening the package, dust or other dirt particles should be removed from it so as not to contaminate the product. Homogenize the product well in the original package using a mechanical mixer to redistribute the possible sediment. Depending on the mode of application, the viscosity is adjusted by adding water to the ambient temperature.
The temperature of the substrate must be at least 5 ° C above the dew point, to avoid the condensation on the substrate, which may lead to decreased adhesion, blistering or even exfoliation. The decorative plaster does not apply below + 10 ° C, as there is a risk that adhesion will be much diminished and consequent damage (exfoliation, dustiness, loosening) will occur.
Be careful! After drying, the primer should not form a glossy film. If it has been formed, it should be sanded.
