PVC skirting board vs. MDF skirting board

What we choose between PVC skirting board or MDF skirting board? It is a question which many clients put in front of the laminate flooring salesperson.

PVC cable channel skirting board is often chosen because we can put cables in it, but few customers know that the place for cables is not very large, up to 3 thin cables. Also, the high-voltage cables such as 220 V can not be wired, but only small current cables such as internet, telephone, or antenna.

The PVC skirting board is directly attached with dowels that come in tight with bolts directly through the cable groove, a relatively easy fixing.

Another advantage is that the high quality ones have a thin silicone band in both the upper and the lower part, the strip that helps the skirting board to be well-fitted on the wall and also protects against the dust.

This type of skirting board supports the installation of cables also through back between the skirting board and the wall, but the access to these cables is very difficult and it is necessary to remove all the dowels for access! Last but not least, it is very easy to maintain and can be cleaned with any cleaning solution without the use of powerful solutions, recommending it for commercial spaces, offices, sports halls and even industrial areas.

We recommend a high white skirting board of 60 mm, 68 mm or 100 mm:

The high MDF skirting board (we are not talking here about the classic one because of the fact that it is only chosen by a very small range of customers) is a modern skirting board that looks very good at any location, both the 60 mm high one and the 68 mm one. This skirting board provides a delimitation that stands out and we say that it offers a premium image to the room.

We often recommend the white skirting board, especially if the walls are white, so the wall “seems” to end directly in the hardwood flooring.

It is not recommended that the skirting board to be in the shade with the hardwood flooring, it can be chosen depending on the wall or door type, the role of the skirting board is to form a frame not to give the impression that the hardwood flooring “climbs” on the wall.

Also at the MDF skirting board we can put cables behind it without any problem.

The fixing on the wall can be done by means of the special clamps, which offer a generous space for cables, they keep the skirting board close to the wall and offer the possibility of removing the skirting board as many times as we want without any problem, an advantage to be taken into account especially as we can use the same skirting board to another hardwood flooring if we want to change it.

The clamps are recommended to be installed one to 0.5 m of skirting board, they may even be rarer if the wall is perfectly straight, these clamps function like a phone casing that opens and puts it back tens of times without having a problem.

The silicone fixing is not recommended in any way due to the fact that: the skirting board does not fit perfectly to the wall, the silicone dries in 24 hours so that until it gets dried the skirting board is away from the wall, it does not allow to remove it in any way, or comes out with the plaster destroying the wall or breaking simply and last but not least if the silicone is water-based will deform the skirting board.

The MDF skirting board is easy to maintain without damaging from repeated cleaning but only with recommended solutions as with PVC.

A secret for those who have very uneven walls and even the clamps can not keep the skirting board perfectly on the wall we recommend using silicone of plaster that is painted and does not change the color in time, so the situations of this kind can be solved and we should not fortify in any case either the PVC or MDF skirting board to take the shape of the uneven wall because the final appearance will be very unsightly!

The high MDF skirting boards do not have internal joints, interior joints, joint sockets or endings, they are installed by cutting at 45 degrees.

As a conclusion we can say that the PVC skirting board is recommended for public spaces with heavy traffic and the MDF skirting boards for houses either as villas or apartments. Our recommendation is to buy from London the skirting board and accessories for skirting board made of either PVC or MDF.
