The refurbishment of the kitchen
Refurbishing the kitchen can significantly increase the value of a house and is therefore the first on the list of improvements that people plan to make. Find out what are the most important steps you need to follow to create a functional and modern space.
- Take into consideration how you are currently using this space and how the kitchen reflects your lifestyle. Do you want an intimate place to enjoy the coffee and read your newspaper or a large perfect place for family activities, children’s homework and culinary projects?
- Find sources of inspiration. Start planning the kitchen refurbishment by visiting a state-of-the-art showroom for kitchen furniture and accessories. Here you will find the latest trends in the kitchen design, including flooring, walls and worktops. Browse the interior design and refurbishment magazines for tips and techniques used.
- Prepare a plan. Consolidate your ideas and set your budget. As a rule, add 20% for unexpected costs.
- Insert the fashion items for a contemporary look and an enhanced functionality. Among the most popular design elements are: the double sink, cupboards, island, stone and decorative glass boards, modern lighting system, the wide ceramic tiles.
- Respect the “working triangle” of the kitchen. Most complaints about the kitchens refer to the fact that their organization hinders the cooking process. This triangle is made up of the imaginary lines which connect the fridge, cooking machine and the sink. For total efficiency, the distance of these lines should not exceed 7-8 meters.
- Bet on elegance. Focus on the use of materials and accessories that give the impression of quality, warmth and classic design. To create an elegant and spacious space, you should orientate towards granite or marble worktops and stainless steel house appliances. Moreover, you should combine different textures, colors, sizes and types of flooring and wall tiles (natural stone, ceramic, porcelain, glass), embrace neutral colors and use a lot of white. If you have a balcony or a pantry near the kitchen, remove the partition walls to open the room and increase the brightness.
- The green means organic. When you refurbish your kitchen, consider how friendly this will be with the environment, using water-saving sink batteries, ceramic materials, natural stone and recycled glass. Also replace the old windows with heat-insulating profiles that save energy. Do not forget to create a special space to recycle the paper, the glass and the aluminum.
The kitchen is the soul of a house, the center of the family activities, and its refurbishment is also one of the smartest investments you can make. Follow the trends in design and never miss the practical element.
Advantages of installing a kitchen peninsula
As part of the kitchen space design projects, we can reach various constraint situations due to the reduced space. For many of the houses or apartments made before 1989 and not only, a big problem is the space and the shape of the kitchen. Let’s talk about the long and narrow spaces, or square-shaped spaces but with a small surface. Sometimes, it is so small that arranging a place to serve a meal becomes a very important issue, and the furniture can only be made to order to meet the needs of a family.
For such situations, the furniture manufacturers are trying to find solutions and develop systems to make the best use of the space, while offering the minimum functions that a kitchen must meet. In this regard, we present a solution for the place to eat, which can replace the traditional meal.
On the market there are solutions like the folding table, supported on one side, on the wall, a useful solution for long and narrow spaces, but not always an option. This will block the assembling space without using it after it has been tightened. Starting from the idea of temporary use of the space without permanent reservation, the profile producers have developed an extractable table system, namely a table peninsula.
The principle is simple. First, a solid support frame is defined to support the weight on the table. Then it is integrated into a furniture body, it will have a folding top and will only be used during meals or other kitchen activities.
The system consists of an assembly of two extractable rails consisting of three modules, an end stiffening profile (handle) and a folding top made of two pieces joined together by invisible hinges. To this is added the door side of the drawer, which will lodge the system. It should be specified that the extraction system is provided with a locking piece, so that after the extraction of the worktop the fixed position can be ensured during the use. The unlocking will only be done when the worktop is tightened.
So we need a space with a drawer height of at least 120 mm to install the system and a depth of at least 550 mm for the furniture. The space provided by the extractable system, the actual area of the worktop, is about 1100 mm. Its width is at the discretion of the users, depending on the width of the available furniture body. Any width may be chosen up to the maximum height supported by the 1200 mm extraction system.
Finally, let’s recapitulate the advantages of the kitchen peninsula:
– It saves space in the kitchen or in the room where we want to install it;
– It can be installed in a small space for a drawer;
– It offers enough space for the kitchen activities or dining for 3-4 people;
– Easy extraction system from the furniture body;
– It has a generous width and length, 1200 mm and 1115 mm respectively, and a 60 kg uniformly distributed load.
Five things to avoid in the kitchen refurbishment
In some houses, the kitchen is a space that comes as an extension of the hall or of the living room, a place where the whole family meets and welcomes guests. In most houses, however, the kitchen remains the traditional place where we prepare the food and where we have dinner or breakfast.
This space has to be well organized and structured, so in this article we will show you the most common mistakes made in the kitchen refurbishment, so that you will know what to avoid.
Do not place the storage spaces without logic. The kitchen stores a lot of things and objects, smaller or larger, perishable or with a long life. From pots, pans, plates and tableware to food that expires one day if it is not kept in the refrigerator or ingredients and spices that can be stored for 6 months or 2 years at the room temperature, all of them have to take their place in your kitchen so that you will have easy access to them.
Carefully arrange the working triangle in the kitchen and be careful not to block it. You can find precious information in our previous article on the organization of the kitchen triangle.
Give importance to the light sources. Every area, from the cooker to the worktop where you cut the vegetables and the meat, should be properly lit, so as not to risk an accident.
Ensure that the kitchen has a proper ventilation. A high-quality ventilation system plays a very important role in the kitchen, because in this room the odors or the condensation are often a big problem. Moreover, steam makes house appliances wear much faster, so it is important to get it out of the kitchen as quickly as possible.
Pay attention to the recyclable waste. You know very well (or you should be aware) that the waste will suffocate the planet one day, so it is important to give importance to the selective recycling. Start by replacing the classic trash can with a multi-compartment one for sorting different wastes: household waste, paper, glass, plastic and metal.
