How to assemble PVC windows?

If you decided to realize on yourself the assembling of PVC windows, you will have to perform the following steps:

  1. The first thing that you need to do is to purchase the windows and to have them in the location where you want to assemble them. Take care as during transport the window profiles to be wrapped in plastic foil to prevent them from scratching or its damaging. During the delivery, the woodwork and windows are brought separately, not assembled.
  2. The second step consists in preparing the space in which windows will be assembled. If you will assemble them to a new house it will be easier because the only thing you have to do is to check the flatness of the spaces edges, and in case of the presence of holes to fix them, so the assembling to be performed more easily. Do not follow the principle “let it because it can be filled with foam”, if the edges of the space are not somewhat flat you will have more trouble in assembling. If you have to replace an old joiner, you have first to remove it with care to produce less damage to the wall. Usually a saw is used to cut the window frame in certain places, and then with a lever or a crowbar the caseis risen up and it is removed by pieces. After removal of the old joiner, you should clean and repair the space where you will perform the assembling of the window.
  3. The third step is the preparation of the tools. Clothes may not make the man, but the tools make the craftsman. You will need:

– Electric percussion drill to which you will attach a drill for concrete of 6.5mm;

– Electric screwdriver with bit type T30;

– A drill for metal of 6.5mm;

– A hammer for plastic, spirit level, wooden wedges with thick of 1-3cm;

– A fixing shovel for PVC window;

– Assembling screws for PVC windows of 7,5mm diameter and different lengths depending on the distance between the joinery and the edge of space;

– Fixed wedges and adjustable wedges;

– Foam gun and polyurethane foam.

  1. The next step is to prepare the joinery for assembling. First it will be checked for the drainage and the ventilation holes in the profile. Then the profile and the holes will be measured, in this way verifying if on the one hand and other of the joinery 1-2cm remain to the edges of hole. If the dimensions are right, you should start to drill the profile with the metal drilling. We recommend drilling the lower profile and not mounted in empty because drilling through the metal section of the joinery is more difficult to make and you will have trouble. Not to mention if you drill a hole into the profile, it will to through the profile and the force with which you push the power drill, the drill for metal will go to the other side and it will reach the concrete wall and you will damage the drill. The holes in the profile are given in that place where the assembling screws will be fixed. They are assembled on the vertical sides of the woodwork at the top and bottom part at a distance of 10-20cm to the edge of the frame and one screw in the middle (approximately, depending on the position of the assembling) on top and bottom sides.
  2. The joiner panel is assembled in the window space and it is set on the position using a spirit level after that it is fixed with the wooden wedges. Then, we can drill the wall with the drill for concrete of 6.5mm. If the edges of the space are from BCA or wood, the holes will never be made but they will be directly screwed with the fixing screws. The first screw to be fixed is the one from the top, and then we will fix the other screws verifying the flatness with the spirit after each screw screwed. It will be checked the flatness on all 3 axes x, y, z.
  3. At the next step, we will apply the polyurethane foam between the profile and the edge of space, both outside and inside. Be careful not to overdo the quantity when applying because the foam expands (swells).
  4. After the foam dried, we will assemble the glass using the hold. The first glass that will be assembled is the fixed one and then the moving one. Fixing the glass is realized with the fixing shovel through placing the hold between the PVC profile and the glass, on each side, so that the glass to be well-fixed and the closing-opening process of the window can easily be performed. Holds arrangement differs from fitter to fitter.
  5. The last step is assembling the rods on the frame. Firstly is assembled the top rod by inserting the ends and then tapping with a rubber hammer from edges toward the middle, the whole rod will be assembled. Repeat the process for all rods on the window perimeter.

After you have assembled the windows, you will need to cut the excess of foam, and perform the finishing lintels.
