Painting the walls: choosing the suitable paint and steps of the work
Choosing the paint is the first step in refurbishing of the interior, whether you decide this by yourself or if you are calling for a specialized company. Washable paint gives a pleasant finish and it represents a quick and quite inexpensive way to change the look of the interior.
The selection criteria are: the quality of the paint (to be applied perfectly, to have a high covering power and to require as few layers as possible), the small amount of material per square meter, the ability to be washed (the resistance to washing of the finished surfaces – the good paints resists at 100 washing cycles), using it both indoors and outdoors, the consistency, the durability in time, the low degree of toxicity (it has to contain as few volatile substances as possible), the short time for drying and the easy application.
How to paint by yourself
If you have taken this decision it is important to know few things. The surface that is going to be painted must be in a good condition, it means that it should not have mold, efflorescence and it should not be uneven. It also must be clean and dry, to present a uniform colour and an absorption rate as low as possible. If the wall is wet, fix the causes, the safest solution is its insulation. In the case of mold, use anti-mold products or a solution composed of chlorine and water (chlorine 25%).
If the wall is brittle, it is recommended to plaster again totally or all the affected areas. The cracks should be cleaned and sealed with plaster. In the case of deep cracks, apply the reinforcement fiber glass tape. After the drying of the plaster, polish the repaired surface with sandpaper.
When you choose the colours, you should take into account that the shade that will be on your walls could be different than the samples which were presented to you at the purchase. This thing happens frequently because of the absorption rate of the underlying layer, of its colour and even because of the brightness of the room. The solution? It takes a lot of experience or to realize some samples on the walls of the house, which means an extra expense.
The steps of the work
The first steps of the work consist in sticking an adhesive tape to protect the floor or other surfaces and preparing the paint according to advice of the manufacturer. It is recommended painting from top to bottom in successive squares with the side of one meter, starting with a corner of the room (for example from the right corner to the left one if you are right-handed). Painting the areas where the big roller can not penetrate and the joints between the wall and the ceiling is done using a small roller or a medium brush.
The second layer of the paint is applied after the first one has dried, into strips perpendicular to the window, on the direction of the light. At the end, it is smoothed into strips parallel with the window, without having to dip the roller. Once you have determined the area from which you start to paint the wall, do not stop the work at the half of it, but continue to the other corner without returning to the areas on which you already applied the finishing. If in the thin areas which you painted with the brush, you know these differences in appearance comparing to the background of the wall, you should return to painting with the small roller.
