How to decorate small rooms?

By decorating small rooms we can really bring our house back to “life”, especially if all kinds of boring and tedious details started to appear. In any house – but particularly in the tiny ones – every centimeter counts. Small shelves, small niches and other small rooms can give to your house a little tidy and tasty appearance.

What should you do?   Give up the mess

If you focus on the small rooms, you will manage to avoid the congestion when it comes to decorations. Sometimes a small pot, a floral arrangement or a hidden lamp in a corner can bring more personality to a room than a large arrangement placed in the middle of the living room table.

This attitude when it comes to space utilization assures you a comfortable house without a cramped or exaggerated look, and pushes you to use and exploit the spaces that until now you were not taking them into account.

Have a look on your window jamb. What do you see there? If your answer does not include something else than the “dust”, it means that you do not take advantage of small rooms arrangement. Use the window area to store for example an important personal collection. Make sure you use objects that will look good in bright light of a window and which of course they will not be affected by sunlight.

Besides adding new decorations, you will want to give up or modify old ones. You can give up on your large curtains and fix your attention on niches, small shelves and other small surprises that will delight your sight.

Seek prominent spaces

You can also look for existing prominent places in your home. You can make them useful by decorating them with plants or small attractive objects, which certainly will be attractive for hosts, as long as they are positioned discretely.

Use the space

If your rooms are small, you can make them look bigger by adding mirrors or colourful prints (wallpaper motif or stickers). Large prints and dark colours will look even bigger than they are, but they will substantially minimize the room. If you do not feel comfortable with too many shiny surfaces or mirrors, you can opt for decorating them with different shapes and textures.

You will also want one type of furniture that can satisfy your desire to streamline the space without cluttering it. When it comes to decorating small rooms, the extra room space can be used more for passing space, for a table or for a floor lamp.

Folding furniture

If you do not have enough space for a normal table you should use a folding table that you can deposit after a cupboard and use it whenever you need. You can do the same trick with chairs and coffee tables or any object that has the function of folding.

Less means more

In a small room everything becomes a focus point. When you decorate a small room you will want that every detail to matter in terms of beauty. Keep your favourite elements and give up the others, most often kept in the irresistible impulse to collect them.

Break the rules, but carefully

Do you have a big table that you love but you can not fit it in the small living room? It’s alright to use a large piece of furniture as long as it suits with the room decor. Using a large amount of furniture with a small size can be a problem as big as it is using an inappropriate furniture size. Instead, decorate in a smart way and leave enough space for passing and use  practical furniture, unique. If the furniture is too large, use a type of furniture with many open and attractive spaces.

If you decided to paint the walls in a darker shade then be careful to the ceiling to be in the same shade, and the floor not to have too high contrast. As long as you do not have a too high contrast from room furniture the room will look great. You can almost always break the rules when it comes to decorating a small room because you do not have so many choices and the mistakes are not so easily distinguished.

Use the furniture for more purposes than those which it is intended

It is possible for the coffee table to serve as a dining room if you add a set of chairs? Could the dining table be used like an office desk? Think about just how much space you will save by applying this rule in every room. Did you think that instead of the coffee table you can use a chest or a box that has also the role for storage and table? If it looks ugly you can cover it with a tablecloth. Instead the floor lamp you can use a lamp placed on a sideboard, in this way you save a useful space.

Do not forget to use also the space for storage under the bed!

Decorate by rotation

If you have some favourite decorations, you can move them back and forth through the whole house, in this way it can be fun but it can prove also very practical. Certainly every time you rearrange the decorations, you will have a reason to enjoy and admire with other eyes your new house, and your little treasures.

Good luck and if you think you hit the perfect decorations for a corner, you can send us some pictures and we will tell you what you did right and what you did … very good.

If you feel that advices from a specialist could help you, you should know that we are always willing to talk with you.
