Service Description

What do you need to do for a perfect kitchen refurbishment?

If you have decided to refurbish your kitchen you need to know what steps to take, who to call and most important or what is the end result that you want. You can start by looking for kitchen photos and appliances that you would want to have in your new kitchen and then look for contractors and kitchen designers that understand what you want are able to meet your expectations.

To make your job easier we have compiled a list of steps that you should take to accomplish your kitchen remodeling project successfully.

What do you want?

Think how you want your kitchen to look, if you want to change its layout and have more space, how many people will use it, if you need more storage space, etc. Do a scrapbook with pictures of kitchens that you like and that suit your style.

Research and plan

Now that you have decided to start this project, decide what your budget is. Remember that the budget and the project details may be subject to change during the design process when you will decide what you want and what you can afford.

Find the right contractor

Even if you would want to make it a DIY project it’s impossible to complete it all by yourself, unless you are super savvy and know how to build kitchen cabinets and do the electrical and plumbing installations. The best choice would be to hire a professional company who know what they are doing and who have subcontractors in any field.

The best way to find a good company is through referral, by asking friends, colleagues and family to recommend you someone they have worked with and were satisfied with their services. You can also do an internet research and find reliable London companies based on their reviews.

A professional contractor will be able to handle everything from contracts and permits to space planning, budget, choosing finishes and fixtures, shopping, ordering products and managing your project from start to finish.

Design

The design phase includes space planning, sketching, preliminary floor plans and elevations showing the cabinet sizes and layout. Why are all these necessary? Because you need a plan to figure out what materials will be needed and what will go where, how many square feet you will need and the cost of the whole project.

I like to begin the contractor interview process early and give them a preliminary drawing packet and scope of work so we can get some ballpark construction numbers. At the same time you can be sending out drawings for estimates on some top choices of finishes and fixtures.

Fixtures and finishes

This is where your kitchen pictures will be useful. At this point you will decide whether you want a classic, modern, cottage, traditional or a personal style kitchen, if you want a natural wood kitchen, white, black or any other color, etc. Now you will choose your cabinetry construction, doors, counter top material, light fixtures, backsplash, flooring, decorative hardware, kitchen sink and faucet, refrigerator and other appliances.

Design development and construction documents

At this stage you have to finalize the design and prepare the final details, floor plans, interior and exterior elevations, lighting and mechanical and electrical drawings. At this point you will also need the final permit set or Construction Drawings (CDs) and the final pricing from the contractor. Your contractor will handle the final paperwork and get the needed permits.

Get ready

About 4-8 weeks since you submitted for permits you can start cleaning the cabinets, put in storage what you want to save and set a temporary kitchen if you plan to stay in the home until the project is done. Some prefer to move out of the house and come back when it’s all done, but it’s up to you.

Discuss all the details and communication options with your contractor. Decide how many times and when you will meet, who you can contact when there’s an emergency, if they will remove the debris and dust, how many people are in the team, etc.

Sometimes, after the project is done, there are still some things that were wrong, missing or forgotten about. Make a list an email it to the contractor. It is in his attribution to get them fixed. So keep calm and do not exaggerate for small things. Anything can be repaired.
