How to assemble and fix interior doors?

Changing the interior doors is not as easy as it seems to be, you should keep in mind some details, first of all when you make the acquisition.

Before you purchase the door you should measure the available space (with a ruler you should measure the width and the length, you should also keep in mind the material that is near the old door frame, it could fall; the best way to do it is to take off the old door frame before the measurement).

Be careful when you look at the pane it should not be cracked, it should not move. You bought the door frame and the accessorizes but there are still necessary the following: a big foam spray for assembling, 6 anchor dowels of 10 width (the length varies according to the space that remains between the door frame and the wall)  and 2 metal quoins (if you don’t find quoins, you can buy 10 negresses of 3 cm).

Assembling the door frame

The assembling of the door frameis done on the floor in the middle of the room on an old carpet or the door’s wrapper. You should cut with the cutter from the gasket if those are long and you should attach the metal quoins (if you did not find quoins, you should fix the door frame in negresses).

Following this, you should make holes in the door frame for the anchor dowels. With a wood drill of 10 width you should make holes on the edge where the door comes when it is closed (the thinner part of the door frame).

With a metal drill of 12 width and reverse rotation you should enlarge the beginning of the hole so as the tip of the dowel to be buried (you should be careful to enlarge just a little bit otherwise the drill will be buried to deep into the door frame).

At what distance the holes for the dowels are done?

Orientate yourself and settle on which of the two door frames the hinges will be assembled. On the door frame with hinges, the dimensions for the holes are: 25 cm – the upper hole (the measurement is done on the interior of the door frame), at 1 m the middle hole and at 1,75 cm the lower hole.

On the door frame where the bolt is closed the only thing that is different is the dimension of the middle hole, this one is placed at 90 cm. (at 90 cm because at approximately 1 m the hole for closing the bolt is placed).

The door frame is perforated and the corners are fixed, you should measure the length of the door which usually is of 2 m and also measure the length of the interior of the door frame ( Attention – the interior means where the gaskets are) and you should see how many cm remain below.

That distance will remain below the door. You should keep in mind what you will place in the interior of the room. If more space must be available, you should insert a wedge under the door frame when it will be assembled, if a smaller space is needed, you should measure exactly and cut from the door frame with the pendular saw.

Assembling of the door frame into the wall

For assembling the door frame you need a level, churn drill with a SDS drill of 10 width, screwdriver for the anchors and wedges (the wedges are made from the old door frame, you should cut pieces from door frame with the pendular saw and you should break them with a knife and a hammer depending on the width of the space between the door frame and the wall). The wooden wedges should be fixed near the hole of the dowel.

You should assemble the door frame in position. It is recommended that you should fix the front of the door frame at the same level with the wall, once you fixed the cleats can be assembled on the door frame. After the door frame is assembled in position, if you want it higher you should add a wedge under the door frame on which the hinges will be placed.

The first one that you should fix in the wall is the door frame on which the hinges will be attached. This is good to be as close as possible to the wall, even stuck to the wall, all the weight of the door will press on this door frame.

Keep the door frame at the level and drill first the upper hole. The hole must be deeper than the anchor with 1 cm. If you have to add the wooden wedge, you should do this before to put the dowel. Adjust the door frame carefully at the level on the exterior and also on the interior (it is very important to adjust carefully the door frame with the hinges at the level and after the assembling the door will take the level of this door frame.

Introduce the anchor (you should screw out some threads then you should introduce the anchor as it enters a little bit in the hole, then you should hold the screwdriver on the head of the screw and hit with the hammer until the screw is buried a little bit in the door frame – it is very important to bury the screw). After you carefully fixed up, the middle and the lower parts are following, the other door frame will be fixed after you fix the door.

Attaching the door into the hinges

You should place the door on the floor with the part where the hinges should be placed up. You should orientate and decide in which side the hinges should be placed. You should measure from the upper door frame to the first dowel (the hinge should be placed on the dowel). You should have 25 cm.

You should take 25,5 cm from the end of the door and here comes the middle of the hinge and then you should attach it on the door with clamps (25,5 cm because 3 or 4 mm remain the upper distance between the door frame and the door). You should measure and attach to the door all the three hinges.

Open the hinges at 90 degrees and you should put the door into position. You should put the wooden wedge under the corner of the door that is near the door frame, in such a way that you will have 3 mm up of distance between the door frame and the door.

You should fix the hinges in the door frame with threader and clamps ( attention, the part of the hinge which remain out of the door frame should not get over the door frame, it must be stuck to the door frame).

If you have problems with the clamps that you received when you purchased the door, you can fix in negresses of 2,5 cm (if you use the negresses you should not screw them too hard, they can crack). You should fix all three hinges on the door frame.

Adjusting the door frame on the door

Now you should close the door and take measurements for the wooden wedges. The door frame is fixed depending on how the door closes, you should not take into consideration the level anymore, the door is at the level if you did right with the door frame on which the hinges are placed. This is what you should do next. You should close the door and adjust the door frame near the door (between the door frame and the door, it needs to be an equal distance from up to down, approximately 3 mm).

Firstly, you should orientate yourself to adjust the door frame for fixing the upper anchor dowel. You should put the wooden wedge under the door frame and  set up the wedge for the upper dowel ( you should measure and cut the wooden wedge exactly on the dimension between the wall and the door frame, when you introduce and beat the anchor you should be careful that it would not pull to the wall).

You should put into the right position the upper part and drill a hole, introduce the wedge, add the anchor, beat and screw it. You should close the door and check the upper part ( between the door frame and the door you should have the same distance and the door should move easily without anything holding it).

The lower dowel is following, you should proceed in the same way with the closed door, you should fix the position of the door frame, the wedge should be measured, you should drill, add the wedge and fix the anchor. You should try it and if everything is ok you should fix the last dowel, the middle one.

If you did well, the door should close normally without anything holding it, it should be placed on the gasket all the way from the top to the bottom and the door frame should be fixed well. If something is not working well, you should check for the reason and fix the mistake.

Filling the empty space between the wall and the door frame with assembling foam

You should put foam between the door frame and the wall. You should mix well the foam spray, screw the plastic pipe and from the bottom to the top insert the foam. You should keep the plastic pipe on the middle of the door frame and press very easily (in that way you will not insert to much foam).

If the space between door frame and the wall is bigger than 2 cm, you should insert polystyrene, leave space between the door frame and the polystyrene for the foam. If you don’t insert much foam and the door frame is well-fixed in the anchor dowels, the door frame is not allowed to be distorted (the foam can not distend the door frame if this one is well-fixed in the anchor dowel). You should stick paper duct tape on the door frame before adding the foam.

What can you use to repair near the edges of door frame?

When the foam is dried you should repair. The reparation near the edges of the door frame is done with gypsum. You should cut the foam carefully not to scratch the door frame and after you secure with paper duct tape, you should repair near the edges of the door frame with gypsum.

You can repair with adhesive mixed with a little bit of gypsum, if the space between the wall and the door frame is wide. You can add in the dipper some water and for 5 palette knifes of polystyrene adhesive one palette knife of gypsum is required and then you should mix. After the material dried out you should beat the laths on the door frame with small nails.

What can you use to fill the space that remained above the door?

Above the bedroom’s doors usually panes were placed. That space should be filled after the door is assembled. You can do this with plasterboard or polystyrene. You can pin the profiles, cut the plasterboard and pin them in the both sides with negresses. If you don’t have plasterboards or it is easier for you, you can pin polystyrene.

The door frame has the width of 10 cm. You should cut and put a polystyrene plate of 10 or 2 or 5 glued. Over the polystyrene you can put the net, adhesive and apply the polishing plaster coat.

Fixing the bolt and the door handles on the door

You should fix the bolt with clamps. You have to put all the accessorizes on the handle’s plate without holes. You have to fix all with screws (do not force when you fix the screws). On the bolt you should add tooth paste or hand cream and in this way you mark the place where you should drill the hole in the door frame. After you drilled the hole you can apply the plate on the door frame.
