The chimney is one of the important details of all the houses that are not connected to a centralized heating system. Practically, 90% of houses need a chimney for removing the gas produced by burning of the natural gas or of the solid fuel used for houses heating or for hot water production.

The chimney is also an essential element for the safety of the house, its good construction and, especially, its maintenance is vital. Statistically, 75% of fires that occur to private houses start because of the chimney, as a result of its improper construction or clogging.

How to choose the ideal heater

The chimney is connected to a steam-generating station that works on wood or gas. Each type of chimney (for wood steam-generating station or for solid fuel or gas steam-generating stations) has different characteristics, parameters, rules of maintenance and special rules that should be respected.

The chimney must be gas-tight and thermic insulated, with a perfect vertical journey axis, smooth, with a room for harvesting the solid materials and it should rise at least half a meter above the roof.

The first rule. The chimney must have a capacity according to power of steam-generating station. A chimney with a small surface decreases flow of the smoke and reduces the circulation and blocks the burning and the elimination of emissions while a chimney with a large surface behaves strangely and causes  high fuel consumption, and also one part of the active heat is lost on the chimney. The diameter and the characteristics of the chimney must be between the parameters indicated by the designer of the steam-generation station.

The technical room. What it is important to know?

For a steam-generation station which works on wood, with a power of 25 kw, the chimney must have at least 10 meters, it must have a manhole and it must be placed straight without bends. The position and the orientation of the house have to be took into consideration, and according to these details, the chimney will or will not have protection or its own roof.

The second rule. A steam-generation station that works on wood, pellets or charcoal needs a different type of chimney compared to that of a gas steam-generation station. The temperature of the flue gases varies depending on the type of the steam-generation station, on the calorific value of the fuel and on the materials from which the chimney is made that should withstand the temperature without any problems (with a maximum around 400 degrees) and have the capacity to cope with sudden temperature variations without suffering cracks.

The third rule. The chimney must be protected against the condensation, and the best solution is its construction stuck to one of the outer walls of the house, to keep it warm when in no flame in the steam-generation station, by taking the heat from the house. A so-called hot chimney can be achieved also through good insulation with high-temperature resistant materials (usually glass wool – and only glass wool because it is fireproof).

Revision of the steam-generation station. How much it is and why should we do it?

Chimney construction materials are specially designed for this purpose. The best choice is specially shaped fire clay brick (the bricks are smooth on the inside and place of each other forming a cylindrical inner cylindrical space). It possible for the last meters of the steam-generation station, where the gas temperature decreases, to be made of semi-fire clay or brick.

Heating with wood. A practical and ecologic system

Important when building the chimney is the thermal capacity of the steam-generation station, and the degree of insulation of the house, depending on which the necessary capacity of the plant will be decided. All these details must be decided and taken into account when the house plan is made, the chimney and boiler room (mandatory outside) are essential details.
