7 Steps for painting by the book

Either way it is about a new construction with the walls without plaster or it is about a house that is wanted to be refurbished, the finishing works of the walls include several stages.

You should be prepared in advance with lots of patience because everything takes several weeks and during this time your house will look like a construction site.

1.In interior painting, the first step is cleaning the walls of the old paint. Whether it was washable paint, limestone or clay, it must be removed before you can paint again the walls of the room. Cleaning the old paint is done after prior moistening of the walls for soaking the paint and for identifying the areas in which the old plaster distends and needs to be repaired. We moisturize the walls with water using the brush. If the walls are well-moisturized, the old paint is easily removed with palette knife.

2.After the work of cleaning the old paint of the walls, the walls need to be repaired with plaster and adhesive, if it is necessary, after that the plaster can be applied. The primer is easy to prepare from glue with water. The ratio is of 1/10 maximum. We mix well the glue with the water into a bucket to dissolve it. We apply the obtained primer with the brush directly on the wall for moisturize them.

3.After that, we should wait for the walls to absorb the moisture between half an hour and one hour: in the winter we should wait more than an hour and in the summer less because it dries faster. A common error is represented by priming with the roller. The correct way to prime is with the brush, only in this way the substance will penetrate the pores of the material. It is enough if we do it just one time.

4.We can pass then to plastering the walls. This operation is performed using a loading plaster (preferably based on gypsum) special for obtaining smooth surfaces on the walls and on the ceilings from inside the buildings.

The loading plaster characteristics are:

– it allows creating layers up to 10 mm;

– it offers high resistance, in short time, a high adhesion;

– it has resistance to cracking in thick layer and a matte white finish.

The plaster coat will be applied in a uniform layer on the substrate, using a trowel. The layers applied on the wall can be finished with the trowel shortly before the material sets.

The drying time is about one day/ 5 mm of layer.

5.On the surface that was leveled a final layer of finishing plaster is applied because it is smooth and very white, it generates a reduced consume of plaint and it can be very easily finished and also it is durable enough to resist scratching. It can be applied in a layer of up to 3 mm.

6.To finish the plaster, we use either a cloth or sandpaper or an abrasive sheet. Firstly we choose one with bigger granulation and at the final finishing a finer granulation, to give the walls a more pleasant appearance. The advantage of the abrasive sheet is that it allows the passage of the dust that results from the finishing, while making an efficient and smooth finishing of the walls.

7.The walls are plastered and finished, so we are getting ready to apply the washable paint. We apply the primer on the walls before applying the washable paint. The purpose of the primer is to even the capacity of absorption of the wall. In this way, the washable paint will be applied and it will dry evenly. The process is the same as the priming for plastering the wall.

If these steps will be followed, the result is guaranteed!
