Loft conversion in an old house

Every old house has an attic that can be converted only under certain conditions: is it high enough or versatile. If you have decided to turn your storage in one room for living, you can call for tips and for a skilled workforce, so you will not fail in any way to any design or run time.

But if you decided to transform the entire space of the attic, here is how to build an attic in an old house.

First of all, it should be noted how high is the attic and how strong is it for being transformed into an attic. If none of these criteria is accomplished, you need to make a plan that includes strengthening the former ceiling and the next floor of the attic (pouring the concrete) and construction of a high roof (first, by making the walls with smaller dimensions made of concrete, BCA, brick or wood). Also, the house needs to be assessed in its entirety to determine if it has the power to support such a project.

Following to the determination of the project, you will know exactly what the attic destination will be: either as a living room or a child’s bedroom, for guests, library, kitchen or office.

To achieve the parts of the wall, you can opt for various materials – from BCA, brick, to wood. Initially, works are made for strengthening the foundation of the house (if it is needed), then the ceiling will be redone or the future floor and then the structure of the attic will be realized.

The insulation is also needed if you want to turn the loft of your house into an attic. After the construction of the walls and the consolidation, you must insulate the new part of the house so as to be protected from wind, rain, fire, the infiltration ofthe water into the walls, but also from outside noises.

Here, it will be taken into account the manner in which the windows will be integrated into the roof or from which materials will be ordered the windows. You can opt for isolation of OSB panels, with polystyrene on the outside, with mineral wool or with boards of drywall inside.

Do not forget about the supporting pillars! In certain cases, where the space is open and it has a large expanse, it would be good to consider the development of pillars to support the roof. In this way the attic space can be limited.

Also, the finishes will be done to the highest standards – using the latest materials, so as to provide protection against the moisture, fire, against fungi, mould or dampness. If you opt for a wood attic, the walls are laden with PVC panels –they are simple to realize, easy to install and to maintain; they give it a rustic look. The walls can be dressed even with wallpaper, for a classic and sophisticated aspect.

Not only the materials against humidity or water will protect your new rooms, but also the vents performed correctly! The house must be constantly on low moisture levels, regardless of the season (whether it is autumn, and the rains do not cease, whether it is winter and the snow is deposited just above the new building).

Attention to the decision on how the entrance to the attic will be made. Typically, depending on the space, you can opt for a spiral stairway or a rustic stairway. If space allows, you can perform large stairs, in which to be integrate in a library, for example, or even a storage.

The attic windows will be ordered of materials resistant to climate changes, they will be well-insulated and they will not allow water infiltration. To prevent condensation, you can opt for installing a heater right in the area where the windows are.

Regarding the heating installation, you will have to plan to increase the network of pipes and connecting new heaters to the thermic central. The thermic central must face to the attic heating during the winter. As an alternative form the thermic central, you can opt for under floor heating or radiant panels.

The decoration will be made in accordance with the tastes and the needs of equipment room.

So if you want to build an attic in an old house, you need ideas,a project and also a budget. True, the budget can vary depending on how much space you have to change and the quality of materials, but to the end, the result will be one measure. Thus, an unused space will become an excellent space for recreation, rest or work.
