Everything that you should know about the thermal insulation of your house
In the last years, the owners of houses or apartments have understood how important it is to have an optimal temperature in your house, no matter how cold or hot it is outside. Besides the thermal comfort, the biggest advantage of thermal insulation is the substantial reduction of the energy costs or of the gas bill.
Thermal insulation process is not as complicated as it sounds, so more and more owners choose to document well before isolating their houses by themselves, without calling for help to the construction specialists.
If you feel that your house has not been built taking into account the thermal efficiency, it is not too late to make some changes in your help, without affecting the structure of the building.
Here is what you should consider before you start working:
To determine in advance which are the places where the house loses heat through, the easiest way is to use a thermal imager display that will show you exactly the key points where the insulation is necessary.
There are several types of insulation: the one made on the inside, where the walls are “coated” usually with polystyrene boards, mineral wool or drywall, and insulation of the ceiling and the floor, where they allow changes, and the external insulation, where the walls of houses are “strengthened” with BCA boards like these.
The advantages of this material are provided by the air holes from inside of it, that give a superior resistance to temperature and noise, it is easy to assemble, it is not expensive and the material loss is minimal, because the BCS blocks can be cut on the exact size that you need.
Depending on the material from which your house is built and the quality of work, it is possible that the interior insulation is not enough to keep the warmth and, besides this, it does not always help you to get rid of the dampness and moisture. If you isolate your house just inside, the external wall will be at risk to sweat because of the difference of temperature between these two layers. Although it is fast and does not cost very much, the internal insulation should be seen rather as a step toward the thermal efficiency of the house, not a complete solution.
As far as that goes the external insulation, it has the advantage of not decreasing the useful space of your home, but the disadvantage is that it requires an ample process, complex, a little bit more expensive and for that you have to arm yourself with patience and time.
A very important aspect that you have to take into account is the way that you combine the materials. This must be executed as precise as possible, so that between the boards of material not to remain areas without adhesive, through which subsequently the water and the moisture will infiltrate. At the end of the work, the wall should look like a solid piece, without holes, stuck and attached to the wall of the building.
The floor insulation is more difficult to achieve if your house is already finished. If you chose a floor covered with sandstone or marble, you should know that these materials preserve, normally, a lower temperature. The easiest way is to isolate the wooden floors, under which you can place extruded polystyrene boards of 5 cm.
The same material can be applied for ceiling insulation, but you should take into account that these are more complicated operations for which it is the best to hire a professional builder to avoid the serious errors in the structure of the house.
Do not forget that the windows have a very important role, they are the place where most of the heat is lost. PVC windows are the best when it comes to keeping the heat, but here are also differences in the quality of the materials. They should close tightly and the locking system should be to be durable and reliable. You can guide also depending on the heat loss coefficient that shows the heat loss, which should be as low as possible.
A house where the ambient temperature is pleasant both in summer and winter is not difficult to be obtained. The materials are urging everyone, and the costs are amortized over time, because you will have a cool house in the summer, so you use less the air conditioning, and you will have warm house in winter, when you will no longer use the heaters at a very high temperature.
